It may still be summer, but now is the time to start making your Halloween and Holiday plans for this year. Tickets are on sale now for two of New Hope Valley Railway’s (NHVR) most popular train ride events—Track or Treat: Halloween Express and Santa’s Reindeer Roundup Express.

NHVR, which is operated by the North Carolina Railway Museum, festively decorates its train, rail yard and train route for both ride events.

“Many families return each year to our railway to enjoy both our Halloween and Santa trains,” says Tom Hutchinson, NHVR marketing representative. “Both ride events offer a fun and unique way for friends and loved ones to spend time together and celebrate the spooky and holiday seasons.”

On Saturdays, Oct. 16, 23 and 30, visitors to the all-volunteer railway can enjoy a kid-friendly train ride complete with scenes of flying witches, smoking cauldrons, large pumpkin faces, Count Dracula and other friendly creatures along the route. Passengers can also play Mummy Mayhem, a game where riders search for 13 mummies hidden along the train tracks.

In the rail yard, families can listen to songs by the popular singing pumpkins and take advantage of the many photo opportunities. Halloween costumes are encouraged for passengers of all ages.

Families and rail enthusiasts can celebrate the Holiday season on Saturdays and Sundays, Dec. 4, 5, 11, 12 and 18 with Santa’s Reindeer Roundup Express rides. While aboard the Triangle’s Train, young railfans can search for Santa Claus’s nine missing reindeer (including Rudolph) and each child will receive one individually wrapped candy cane.

Like last year, Santa will not board the train and instead will be sitting in his sleigh in the rail yard for photo opportunities using a personal camera.

These ride events can sell out, so it’s strongly recommended to purchase tickets online in advance. Visit and click ‘Buy Tickets’ to view the railway’s ticket calendar and see train departure times.

Individuals can also support the nonprofit Museum and Railway by purchasing a ticket for its first raffle fundraiser. The 2021 Railway Raffle offers a chance to win a variety of fun and unique experiences at NHVR that can be enjoyed by all ages—four free tickets for 2021 Santa’s Reindeer Roundup Express trains, personal cab tour of a diesel locomotive, $25 gift card to the Museum Gift Shop and one 2022 Operate-a-Loco experience.

Tickets cost $10 with only 1,000 being sold. Proceeds will support the rebuilding of Steam Locomotive #17, which is currently undergoing its mandated 15-year Federal Railroad Administration inspection. Learn more and buy a raffle ticket at
