#1190 Grey Family Lines Caboose
Introducing Caboose #1190 — the newest addition to the New Hope Valley Railway train consist!
After years of preservation and restoration work, #1190 Grey Family Lines Caboose is ready to roll!
Donated to the North Carolina Railway Museum by CSX Transportation in December 2019, this historic M-8 caboose has undergone an extensive restoration and has successfully completed all required safety inspections and been cleared for service.
Built in November 1974, #1190 now proudly wears the Grey Family Lines paint scheme, representing an important chapter in the history of the railroads that preceded CSX Transportation.
Beginning in 1972, Seaboard Coast Line and several affiliated railroads—including Louisville & Nashville and Clinchfield—were marketed under the Family Lines System. Although the railroads remained separate companies, they shared a common identity, paint scheme, and marketing system.
The Family Lines paint scheme was introduced in the early 1980s, several years after caboose #1190 was constructed. It is believed #1190 received its Family Lines paint during this period.
In 1982–83, the Family Lines railroads were consolidated into Seaboard System Railroad, which continued until 1986, when it became CSX Transportation.
Caboose #1190 represents this period of transition in American railroad history. Its gray Family Lines appearance reflects the era when the Family Lines railroads were being brought together under a common identity, ultimately leading to today’s CSX Transportation.
#1190’s Next Chapter Starts Now!
After nearly seven years in the Museum’s care and countless hours spent meticulously and lovingly restoring it, #1190 is ready to begin carrying passengers at New Hope Valley Railway.
#1190 will make its first scheduled public rides during our Track or Treat events in October 2026 and will run for the remainder of the 2026 season!
The caboose offers seating for 14 riders, with three additional seats in the elevated cupola. Comfortable chairs around tables provide easy sight lines out the windows and a great setting for conversation as you enjoy your trip on the rails.
