Birthday Party Caboose – FAQ

Q: What is the cost of the Birthday Caboose rental?
The rental fee is $150.00.

Q: What does the Birthday Caboose rental include?

  • 2-hour party in our vintage 1913 Caboose #335 (stationary – does not move)
  • Admission to the NC Railway Museum
  • Reserved outdoor picnic area with one table for your party
  • A complimentary one-hour train ride ticket for the birthday child

Q: Does the package include admission to the museum?
Yes! Admission for all party guests is included. Train ride tickets must be purchased separately, except for the birthday child. Tickets can be added online when booking your party.

Q: Does the Birthday Caboose run with the train?
No. The caboose is stationary and is not part of the train ride.

Q: Are train ride tickets for guests included?
No. Only the birthday child receives a free ride ticket. Guest tickets can be purchased online when you book the caboose. 

Q: How many guests fit in the Birthday Caboose?

  • Inside the caboose: about 15 guests (children and adults)
  • Outdoor picnic table: up to 8 children or 6 adults

Q: What seating and tables are available in the Birthday Caboose?

  • Large room: seats 12–15 children or 8–12 adults
  • Small room: includes a 6-ft service table and built-in desk
  • Cupola (upper observation area): accessible by steep stairs
  • Furniture: one 8-ft table, one 6-ft table, a built-in desk, and 15 chairs
  • Outside: two picnic tables (each seats up to 8 children or 6 adults)

 Q: Will my group ride together on the train?
Yes. If you purchase ride tickets for your guests, your entire group will ride in the same passenger car, shared with other riders. Passenger cars hold up to 60 people, so your group will not have the car exclusively.

Q: Will other people be in our train car?
Yes. A museum host or train crew member will also be onboard for safety. Your group will ride alongside other museum visitors.

Q: When should we be at the boarding area?
Please have your group at the train boarding area 15 minutes before departure.

Q: When can I arrive to decorate?
You may begin decorating 30 minutes before your party. After checking in at the Ticket Office, a volunteer can help transport supplies with a golf cart.

Q: What decorations are allowed?
You may bring decorations, but no glitter, confetti, piñatas, or anything taped/pinned to the walls.

Q: Can I bring food and drinks?
Yes, outside food and non-alcoholic drinks are welcome. Small coolers are permitted.

Q: Is water available onsite?
No potable water is available at the museum. Please bring bottled water if needed.

Q: Is the caboose heated or air-conditioned?
Yes – the caboose has portable heaters in winter and three window A/C units in summer.

Q: Is the Birthday Caboose wheelchair accessible?
No. Because it is a historic rail car, it is exempt from ADA requirements. Guests must be able to climb steps to board. Infants and toddlers may be carried.
